Photofacial is a non-abrasive and non-invasive rejuvenation of your skin using the remarkable technology of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL). IPL Photofacials can improve the signs of sun damage, rosacea and brown spots on the face, hands and body. It has also been used to reduce the appearance of mild acne scars, dark circles around the eyes and fine lines around the eyes and mouth.

The IPL Photofacial handpiece is gently pressed to the skin and painless pulses of light are emitted. Usually 5 treatment sessions lasting about 20 minutes each will provide you with beautiful results.

Photorejuvenation (IPL- Intense Pulsed Light) laser treatments treat:

  • Lightening and removing “sun spots”, “age spots”, and brown blotches on the face, neck, chest, hands and other areas of the body.
  • Lightening and reducing redness, rosacea, dilated blood vessels and “broken” blood vessels on the face, neck and chest.
  • Helping to control flushing
  • It also has a lesser effect of improving skin texture through collagen stimulation and improves pore size minimally by temporarily reducing oiliness
There is no recuperation time – with an IPL Photofacial you can return to work or resume your normal activities on the same day. You will notice a gradual, natural-looking improvement in your skin with time. IPL is a safe solution tailor-made to your skin type and condition.

IPL helps restore a youthful looking skin intended for photo aged or sun damaged skin. It helps decrease facial redness, lessen the appearance of pigmented spots, reduce pore size and improve texture and fine lines.

How does IPL Works

IPL delivers high intensity pulses of broadband light that is non-ablative, meaning that is does not damage the surface of the skin. The intense light is delivered to the deeper parts of the skin (dermis) and leaves the superficial aspect of the skin (epidermis) untouched.

Advantages of IPL

IPL can eradicate red facial veins & flushing, improve acne rosacea, treat irregular pigmentation, dark sun spots, and reduce fine facial lines.

IPL is mainly used to treat the face, neck and hands. IPL is performed to increse the collagen in your skin. The light bypasses the outer layer of skin (the epidermis) and gently heats the cells in the deeper layer of skin (dermis). These cells, called fibroblasts, start to produce more collagen, which improves texture and fine wrinkles.

Candidates for IPL

Patients with rosacea, red flushed faces secondary to acne rosacea, facial blood vessels and capillaries, sun damaged skin, pigmented facial spots and enlarged pores will benefit from IPL treatments.

Darker complexions, tanned skin, spray tans or recently tanned skin individuals are generally not good candidates for the treatment. Men who wish to have facial treatments, should note the beard /mustache area can have patchy hair loss after a session, so may not want to treat this area where regular facial hair grows.

Blood Vessels, Rosacea, Age Spots & Freckles

The laser/IPL device emits a range of lightwaves that are then tuned and targeted at hemoglobin (the red blood cells in the blood vessels) or melanin (the brown pigment in freckles and age spots). The light beam passes through the skin and is absorbed by either hemoglobin or melanin resulting in damage to the vessel wall or fragmenting of melanin pigment. These tiny vessels and the melanin pigment are then absorbed by the body, rendering them less visible.

Patients should undergo a series 3-4 IPL treatments. Treatments are administered every 3-4 weeks. Each treatment session takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes, depending on treated areas.

How IPL Treatment are Performed

During treatment, a cool gel is applied to the treated area, then a pulse of light similar to a rubber band snap is emitted from the handpiece. Generally no local anesthetic is required as most individuals tolerate the treatment well. After the session you may have some redness and feel like a sunburn for the rest of the day, but there is NO DOWNTIME as individual return to work the following day

IPL Results

After one or two treatments, your skin will have more even tone and a smoother look and feel. Sunspots will start to fade and pores can become less apparent. Fine lines and wrinkles may soften over time. These improvements continue with each treatment. Patient with acne rosacea will see a reduction in facial redness as a result of each treatment.

That depends on how much sun exposure your skin gets after your laser treatments. If you are in the sun a lot and do not use sunscreen, the underlying issues, whether they are redness or brown spots, will return. But if you take good care of your skin and keep it protected from the sun, your skin will continue to look good with annual maintenance treatments.

If you want to maintain collagen growth, we currently recommend a treatment every 6-12 months. Other conditions are more variable. If you are very red, once or twice a year may be needed.

IPL Side Effects

Post-treatment pinkness and mild discomfort like a sunburn sensation for a few hours . Areas treated may be prone to hyperpigmentation (darkening of the skin). Avoidance of the sun and wearing sunscreen daily are advised. Because all individuals are different, we generally will begin your sessions at a more conservative level then progressively increase the treatment levels. This will minimize any unwanted side effects and  any potential skin burns,  yet develop an ideal treatment protocol for each individual.
